Control Google TV from your phone

Updated 2026-10-26

Google TV devices (Chromecast with Google TV, TVs with Google TV, Android TV boxes) can be controlled from a phone on the same Wi-Fi. You enter the code shown on the TV once, and after that it connects straight away.

1. Google's own remote

  1. Install the Google TV app (in some regions the remote lives in the Google Home app).
  2. Tap the remote button at the bottom and pick your TV.
  3. Type the code shown on the TV.

On Android you can also add the "Google TV remote" tile to Quick Settings and open the remote without the app.

2. When it won't connect

  • Make sure the phone and the TV are on the same Wi-Fi. Separate 2.4 GHz and 5 GHz names on one router usually still work.
  • "AP isolation" or a guest network on the router stops devices from seeing each other.
  • Restart the TV, or turn the phone's Wi-Fi off and on.
  • No code on screen? Check the device name under Settings → System → About and pick that name in the app.

3. What Beamote adds

Beamote uses the same official connection as Google's remote, plus:

  • App shortcuts: open Netflix, YouTube, Disney+, Prime Video and Spotify on the TV in one tap
  • Phone keyboard: type straight into the TV's search box
  • Projector and TV together: keep an XGIMI projector and your Google TV in one app and switch at the top
  • No ads, no account, 7 days free
